Collaborative GIVE task force tackles gun violence in Tompkins County.

Reviewed by Todd Vandersline / Ithacalocal.org

In the last year, the Tompkins County Sheriff's Office set up a Gun Involved Violence Elimination (GIVE) task force to target gun crimes in the County, particularly in Ithaca. This task force collaborated with various law enforcement agencies, including the District Attorney's Office, Tompkins County Probation, Ithaca Police Department, NYS Parole, and the Southern Tier Crime Analysis Center.

The task force's efforts led to the enforcement of 12 violations, 111 misdemeanors, and 50 felony charges. Additionally, they confiscated 20 illegally possessed firearms, 7 other weapons, 365 grams of methamphetamine, 27 grams of heroin, 285 grams of cocaine, and a significant amount of suspected drug money.

Overall, this initiative has helped decrease shots-fired complaints, disrupt illicit drug operations, and enhance community safety. Starting July 1, 2024, the Ithaca Police Department will take over the lead in these efforts. Sheriff Derek R. Osborne applauds the collective work of the task force and partnering agencies.
