FYST Component Arrives at Cerro Chajnantor Peak

The first major component of the Fred Young Submillimeter Telescope (FYST) has arrived at its final destination. After a six-week ocean voyage, a one-week wait outside Chile’s Port of Angamos for offloading, and a week-long mountain trek, the component reached the Cerro Chajnantor mountaintop. The site sits at more than 18,000 feet above sea level.

Martha Haynes, chair of the Cerro Chajnantor Atacama Telescope (CCAT) board of directors and a distinguished professor at Cornell University College of Arts and Sciences, stated that Cornell has been planning to build a telescope on Cerro Chajnantor for almost 30 years. The arrival of FYST marks an important milestone for the project and the scientific community waiting to use the telescope.
