Amazon Launches 27 Kuiper Satellites, Challenges SpaceX

The first 27 satellites for Amazon's Kuiper project were launched into space last week. The satellites are part of an effort to beam broadband internet globally. Gregory Falco, an assistant professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at Cornell University and director of the Aerospace ADVERSARY Laboratory, noted that the launch marks an important development in the space economy and represents an expansion of the competitive market for broadband services in space. Amazon, which has experience working with government, the defense industrial base, and commercial players, is positioned as a significant new competitor to SpaceX in the United States.
