Cornell Project Recording Slave Resistance Halted by NEH
Cornell University in Ithaca reported that a research project aimed at collecting records of freedom-seeking enslaved people in the pre-Civil War United States has come to a halt. The project, which gathers unique written records that are often the only documentation of these individuals, received a stop-work order from the National Endowment for the Humanities in early May.
Ed Baptist, a history professor in the College of Arts and Sciences at Cornell and a principal investigator on the project, stated that the records provide important insights into the lives of enslaved people who resisted the system of slavery. The records document how these individuals acted against oppression and contributed to significant events that eventually led to the Civil War and the end of slavery.
Further details about the project and its findings were made available by Cornell University.
