Cancer Research Halted Amid Promising Clinical Transition

Nancy Du, an associate professor of pathology and laboratory medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine, has been researching metastatic cancer for more than 20 years. Her work has focused on understanding how cancer spreads, aiming to prevent it from affecting the bones in patients with estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer.

Du had recently secured a $500,000 grant over three years through the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs at the U.S. Department of Defense. The funding was awarded because her research had shown promising results, indicating that the study was close to generating enough data to begin clinical testing.

In April, the project was halted due to a stop-work order. The research team had been near the point of transitioning their findings into a clinical setting when the order was issued.
