CCE Expands Childcare Options in Jefferson County

Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) in Jefferson County is addressing the shortage of childcare options in the region. Many parts of the county are known as "childcare deserts," leaving parents with few affordable alternatives outside of public schools.

CCE Jefferson County operates 18 4-H afterschool programs statewide, serving more than 1,200 students. The programs offer a safe environment for children to complete homework, enjoy snacks, engage in physical activity, and socialize. Parent Kari Lehman expressed that the program makes a significant difference for her family.

In addition to providing childcare, last year up to 80% of participating students improved their math and English language arts grades. The programs also serve transient military families near Fort Drum by offering stability and community.

Additional information on these initiatives is available at Cornell University’s news site.
