Cornell Launches Precision Viticulture at CLEREL Vineyard

The Cornell Lake Erie Research and Extension Laboratory (CLEREL) vineyard in Portland, New York, is serving as Cornell University’s first living laboratory for precision agriculture, autonomy, and sustainability. The vineyard is working to support the grape industry in New York and Pennsylvania.

Terry Bates, director of CLEREL, explained that farms show a lot of environmental variation. He noted that traditional farming methods have used a "one-size-fits-all" approach when setting machines to work. At the CLEREL vineyard, ag sensors, soil sensors, and canopy sensors are now being used to map the variability across the vineyard. This approach is part of a move towards precision viticulture, which aims to tailor farming practices to local conditions.
