"Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson: Legacy Honored Through Art Preservation"

by Katherine Murphy / cbuslocal.org

The Columbus Metropolitan Library commissioned artist Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson in 1990 to create two murals, "Life in Sellsville" and "Life in the Blackberry Patch", showcasing memories of historic Columbus neighborhoods. Initially installed on a stairway in 1991, the murals required renovation in 2016. They were carefully removed and reintegrated into the new structure where they can be seen by visitors today.

Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson, born in Columbus in 1940, earned recognition as one of the most important American artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. Her artistic style aimed to portray the lives and events of ordinary and extraordinary African Americans, filling the gaps in American history. Throughout her career, she garnered acclaim from various museums and galleries worldwide, securing awards and grants from esteemed arts organizations. Notably, Robinson was awarded a fellowship with The MacArthur Foundation, known as the "genius grant," in 2004.

Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson's legacy endures following her passing in 2015 at age 75. She bequeathed much of her estate to the Columbus Museum of Art, where her renowned home studio, adorned with art, was preserved and transformed into a functional living and working space for artist residents.
