Cornell Confirms Glyphosate-Resistant Waterhemp in New York

Researchers at Cornell University have confirmed that waterhemp in New York state has developed resistance to the herbicide glyphosate. The study, published on January 13 in Weed Technology, analyzed waterhemp samples from soybean fields in Seneca County. The research showed that these samples were five to 12 times more resistant to glyphosate compared to control samples.

In addition to confirming glyphosate resistance, the researchers also identified other classes of herbicides that could effectively control waterhemp. The study provided evidence that the weed may also be developing resistance to additional herbicides.

Waterhemp was first discovered in New York state in 2014 and has now spread to 23 counties. The weed, known for its rapid growth, high seed production, and ability to emerge throughout the growing season, poses significant risks to soybean and corn crops. Previous reports in other states have noted reductions in soybean yields by up to 43% and in corn yields by up to 74%.
