Cornell Develops AI-Powered ASL Tracking Ring

A research team at Cornell University has developed an artificial intelligence-powered ring that tracks fingerspelling in American Sign Language (ASL). The device, named SpellRing, uses micro-sonar technology to continuously monitor subtle finger movements. It is designed so that wearers can input text into computers or smartphones by fingerspelling, a method used in ASL to spell out words that do not have specific signs.

SpellRing is worn on the thumb and contains a microphone and a speaker that send and receive inaudible sound waves to track hand and finger movements. A built-in mini gyroscope also tracks hand motion. The components are housed in a 3D-printed ring and casing that is no larger than a quarter.

The project, led by doctoral student Hyunchul Lim and researchers from the Smart Computer Interfaces for Future Interactions Lab at Cornell’s Ann S. Bowers College of Computing and Information Science, aims to improve upon previous technologies that were considered too bulky and impractical for everyday use. The team believes that with further development, SpellRing could eventually be used to continuously track entire signed words and sentences.
