FDA Drug Shows Promise Against Canine Oral Cancer

Researchers at Cornell University have found that an FDA-approved drug used in human medicine can effectively treat oral squamous cell carcinoma in dogs, the most common oral epithelial cancer in canines. The study, which involved a team from five departments and institutes at Cornell, noted that the drug substantially inhibited tumor growth in both mouse models and dogs enrolled in a clinical trial. In one case during the trial, a dog’s tumor nearly disappeared within a few weeks.

According to Santiago Peralta, associate professor of dentistry and oral surgery in the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, the findings provide a valuable clinical tool. The study was published on February 27 in Scientific Reports. Researchers highlight that the new treatment option may help dogs whose advanced cancer has metastasized, leaving surgery no longer feasible.
