Cornell Aids Wegmans in Enhanced Produce Safety

Cornell University in Ithaca reports that, for the last 15 years, the university has assisted Wegmans and its growers in meeting government regulations and reducing the risk of foodborne illnesses. Fresh fruits and vegetables have been linked to outbreaks partly because they are often grown in soil and consumed raw.

To address these challenges, farmers and produce buyers have increased food safety protocols. These efforts include new practices in the field and the use of new technology in grocery stores. The Produce Safety Alliance (PSA), based at Cornell, has played a key role by sharing information and providing new training.

According to Steve Strub, manager of produce food safety for Wegmans Food Markets, the training sessions involve local experts, including representatives from land-grant universities and state agriculture departments. He noted that these food safety trainings also help decrease plant diseases, extend shelf life, reduce shrinkage at stores, and improve the overall customer experience.
