Cornell Food Science Shines at IFT FIRST

Cornell University food science students had a record-setting performance at this year’s Institute of Food Technologists Student Association product development competition, known as IFT FIRST. The event, held in Chicago from July 13 to 16, challenges teams to develop a new food idea, taking it from concept through marketing and production.

Multiple Cornell teams won top honors at the competition. Professor Gavin Sacks, chair of Cornell’s Department of Food Science, noted that peer mentoring among students plays a crucial role in their success. He explained that experienced students teach new team members, who then become mentors themselves. This system has helped Cornell teams qualify for the finals for 17 consecutive years.

Cornell has a hallway in Stocking Hall featuring posters from previous winning teams, serving as a reminder to current students of the success they can achieve.
