Bittner-Singer Orchards, a 400-acre commercial farm in Niagara County along the shores of Lake Ontario, has operated for over a century. Owned by Jim Bittner ’80, a first-generation farmer, the orchard is a site for applied research conducted by Cornell University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and Cornell AgriTech. Researchers visit the farm weekly to test new fruit varieties and work on projects ranging from integrated pest management and weather modeling to assessing water potential. The collaboration allows scientists and growers to implement findings directly on the farm, speeding up the adoption of new techniques that improve crop health and yields.
